Gimcheon Sangmu's 13 Departures and a Relegation Set in 2025

Bucheon FC 1995 host Gimcheon Sangmu at Bucheon Stadium at 16:30 KST today, Saturday 19 September, in round 30 of Hana Bank K League 1 2026. That is 07:30 UTC, 03:30 in New York, 08:30 in London.

Thirteen Gimcheon players are wearing that shirt for the last time. Gimcheon Sangmu is the football team of the Armed Forces Athletic Corps, so its squad is made up of professional players serving their conscription, and they arrive and leave in numbered intakes instead of transfer windows. The current group is the tenth intake, written 10기 in Korean. The club's own match preview calls this "10기 선수들이 김천상무 유니폼을 입고 치르는 마지막 경기", the last match the 10th intake plays in a Gimcheon Sangmu jersey.

Where the thirteen go

MHN Sports published the full list on 11 September, opening with "오는 10월 6일 김천상무 10기 선수 13명이 전역한다." Thirteen players are discharged on 6 October and go back to the clubs that hold their contracts.

Eight of them land in K League 1. Baek Jong-beom returns to FC Seoul, Lee Su-bin and Jeon Byung-gwan to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, Lee Geon-hui and Kim Tae-hwan to Jeju SK, Lee Jung-taek to Daejeon Hana Citizen, Kim Yi-seok to Gangwon FC, and Moon Hyun-ho to Ulsan HD. The other five join K League 2 clubs: Kim Ju-chan to Suwon Samsung Bluewings, Park Chul-woo to Suwon FC, Koh Jae-hyun and Park Se-jin to Daegu FC, and Lee Chan-uk to Gyeongnam FC.

The MHN piece runs under the headline "전역은 영입과도 같다", a discharge is the same as a signing. Ten clubs get a player back for the run-in without paying a fee, and one club loses thirteen at once. Gimcheon's next fixture after Bucheon is at home to Anyang on 10 October, and none of these thirteen will be in that squad.

Eighteen draws in twenty-nine matches

Gimcheon have four wins, eighteen draws and seven defeats from 29 games, 30 points, eleventh of twelve, goal difference minus eight. Eighteen draws. I could not get the K League's own standings page to render its table. The figures load by script and the page I fetched was empty, so those numbers come from the live FotMob table, which matches the Korean Wikipedia standings template as updated to 13 September.

They are hard to beat, and they rarely beat anyone either. On 13 September at home to Gangwon FC they led 2-0 through Kim Ju-chan in the third minute and Park Se-jin in the 43rd, then conceded in the 73rd and again from a penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time. That was 2-2, and the discharge ceremony for the 10th intake was held after the final whistle.

Manager Joo Seung-jin said this in the post-match press conference, and the apology is the interesting half: "끝까지 응원해 주신 팬 여러분께 감사하다. 지난 경기와 비슷한 상황이 된 것 같아서 죄송하다고 말씀드리고 싶다." Thank you to the fans who supported us to the end. I am sorry, because it turned into much the same situation as the last game.

Against today's opponents they are unbeaten in nine league games, per the same club preview, which also records a 2-0 win at Bucheon on 25 April and one win and one draw against them this season.

The club's stated aim for today is to keep alive a route into Final A, the top-six group the league splits into after round 33. Four rounds of the first phase remain for Gimcheon, so twelve points are available, and they sit nine behind sixth-placed Daejeon with Pohang, Incheon, Anyang and Bucheon also in between. That is my arithmetic from the table above rather than anything the club said, and my reading of it is that Final A is gone. The club, four days out from the match, said otherwise.

The drop that was settled in December 2025

None of it changes where Gimcheon Sangmu play next season, because that was decided at a league board meeting last December.

The Korea Professional Football League approved a change to the top division at its sixth board meeting of 2025. From 2027, K League 1 runs with fourteen clubs over 39 matches instead of twelve over 38. The agreement that ties the league, the Armed Forces Athletic Corps and the city of Gimcheon together expires at the end of this season, and under the league's club regulations any newly joining club enters K League 2. Maxports News reported the decision and the consequence together on 2 December 2025. Money Today's headline that same day was blunter: "내년 K리그 승강제 확 바뀐다, '김천 상무 제외' 강등팀 없을 수도" — next year's promotion and relegation system changes completely, and there may be no relegated club other than Gimcheon Sangmu.

Read that against the table and you get the odd situation this season is in. If Gimcheon finish twelfth, they are the only club to go down and nobody else is touched. If they finish eleventh or higher, which they currently do, the club that finishes twelfth goes into a promotion-relegation playoff instead. Gwangju FC are twelfth on 14 points. So every draw Gimcheon pick up between now and round 38 is quietly deciding whether Gwangju get a playoff or a free pass, and Gimcheon's own division is settled whatever they do.

This has happened before to the same institution. Sangju Sangmu, the club's previous incarnation, finished fourth in the 2020 K League 1 with 44 points and still went to K League 2, because the franchise was moving to Gimcheon. The English Wikipedia table note says they "were relegated to K League 2 regardless of their final position by moving their stronghold the next season".

Watching it from outside Korea

Inside Korea the match is on IB Sports and Coupang Play, both named in the club preview. If you are not in Korea, the league runs its own service at tv.kleague.com; when I opened the international page on the morning of 19 September KST it listed the round 30 fixtures for 17–19 September, Bucheon–Gimcheon among them, each with a "Watch now" control. I did not sign up, so I cannot tell you the price or which countries it covers.

A 16:30 KST kickoff is 03:30 for anyone watching from the US east coast, which is a grim hour for a game between eleventh and tenth. The case for setting an alarm is that you will not see this fixture again. From 2027 Gimcheon Sangmu are a K League 2 club.

The club's preview of the Gangwon game carries one more detail. Lee Jung-taek could not play in the farewell match at Gimcheon, because he had been sent off in the game before it. He gets Bucheon instead, in front of whichever travelling support makes the trip.

Baek Jong-beom walking back into an FC Seoul side fifteen points clear at the top of that same table is the least interesting answer available. So which of the other twelve changes his club's run-in?

Where to Watch South Korea vs Qatar, Asian Games Opener in Nagoya

South Korea's men open their Asian Games title defence tonight, September 15, against Qatar at Paloma Mizuho Rugby Stadium in Nagoya. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. KST, the same clock as Japan, so 11:30 a.m. in the UK and 6:30 a.m. on the US East Coast.
